• "Tens of millions of Americans, who neither know nor understand the actual arguments for or even against evolution, march in the army of the night with their Bibles held high. And they are a strong and frightening force, impervious to, and immunized against, the feeble lance of mere reason." -Isaac Asimov

Episode 1.04 and last minute change of plans

It’s funny sometimes how quickly things can change. I recorded this show this afternoon with plans to go out later in the evening. I got behind schedule, became subject to an impromptu dog-sitting, had to scrap my plans and found out that John McCain had all but canceled the RNC activites for Monday…all in the course of about 3 hours.

Take this episode as you will. Being as my RNC plans have changed (see above link) since recording it earlier this afternoon it’s only about 2/3 relevant. I’m leaving it as is and providing all links as usual. The police and FBI round-up of protesters and self declared anarchists has been swift and frightening over the past 48 hours and I’ve provided a bit of info and local links on that situation.

I’ll be doing a few 10-15 minute shows this week as well. No politics, I promise!

Playtime with the westboro cultists!

Being as I live about 20 minutes from the Xcel Center I can’t help but go to the Republican Convention next week. I’ve mentioned in the past that I hope to get some good audio to use for the show (I’ll definitely have pictures if nothing else) and I plan to stick to that.

I’ve been poking around the web and making phone calls to find out who’s going to be where and at what time. It seems 11am Monday, on the steps of the capital, is the place to be. A number of groups have coordinated to meet, then march to the Excel and have a party later in the evening. I question the usefulness of protest in this day and age, especially at an event like this, so I’ll be there hanging out but not actively protesting beyond being another body in the crowd.

This was my plan until this morning: Go, talk to people, get some pictures and video, hang out and have a good time. That is still on the agenda but while trolling around the web it was brought to my attention that the westboro baptist cult is planning on making an appearance. They’ll have a contingent of loonies out there all week but from 12:30 to 2:30 PM on Monday falls right into my schedule…it’s an opportunity I can’t pass up.

When a Poe isn’t.

I stated very early on that it wasn’t my sole intent to make this blog a constant source of fundamentalist ridicule. I hold to that (see my post on Tardigrades) but being as the bigfoot scandal is over, the raelians are quiet and scientologists haven’t tried to kill anyone in a while…I’m at a loss. Some fairly interesting stuff happened in the Olympics this week but I imagine you’re just as sick of hearing about Phelps (not fred) as I am. That aside, and in my own defense, some of this stuff is just impossible to ignore.

Before I jump head-first into the merde de jour I feel the need to make sure we’re all familiar with the term “Poe’s Law” and what it means when someone ‘calls a Poe’.

Seeya later Dems

RiP Democratic PartyA while back it was announced that the Democratic National Convention will be kicked off with what’s being called the “first-ever Democratic National Convention interfaith gathering“. The polarization among loyal democrats seemed nearly instant, some seeing it as a line in the sand and others writing it off as nothing but a show to win votes. The latter was my initial reaction; it just seemed to surreal. The overall weirdness of the ordeal never left my mind but I’ve been able to mentally write it off as a song and dance maneuver to get the fence-sitters until very recently. The Saddleback church event happened, my mind exploded and I saw things a little differently. It wasn’t just an issue of the DNCC alienating atheists, humanists and other generally godless folk anymore, it was all out assault on secular politics.

Keep in mind the difference between being an atheist and believing in a secular government. One is a political view while the other is a world view. You can be of any faith, worship any god you like and still believe in a secular form of government. I only point this out because there seems to be a common juxtaposition of the terms.

If there is no god…ohnoes!

Fundamentalists news websites, how I love thee, especially WorldNutDaily. WND never ceases to provide amusement in the form of fundie logic and wacky advertisements. Claiming itself as a ‘news source’ this beyond right-wing rag makes Fox news look like the Disney Channel. I used to get pissed at the B.S. they sling but I’ve come to embrace it for what it really is; satirical humor. Some people can take this stuff with a grain of salt and some can’t, so steer clear if you’re easily  aggravated by ignorant bible thumping and rhetorical, fallicious logic. If you can stomach it ignore the ‘news’ links and head straight for the commentary pages. With scathing insights from the likes of Anne Coulter, Pat Boone, Hal Lindsey and Chuck Norris (yes, that Chuck Norris…sorry kids, he’s a hardcore creo-bot) you know you’re in for a treat.

In all fairness, there are a small handful of decent commentaries to be found if you really work for it. They have to print a few things that aren’t completely batshit crazy if they want to call themselves “credible”.

Tonight this little gem caught my eye: If there is no God.

Episode 1.03

I finally have a firm grasp on my audio software! The overall quality should be quite a bit higher then the past shows. As best I can tell the last technical aspect I need to cover is a higher quality mic, which will happen, as soon as funds allow.

48min, 10 sec (roughly 39mb)

Can’t stream it? Download it! (right click below link and hit ‘save as’)

Episode 1.02

1.02 is live!

Taking the technical follies of 1.01 into considering it should be much cleaner. I am still learning all the inner workings of my audio software so please forgive any slight audio mishaps.

35 min, 44 seconds (roughly 25mb)

Can’t stream it? Stream cutting off early? The Feeble Lance – ep1.02 (right click and hit “save link as”)

– Brief rant about the media, the universe didn’t explode!, go waterboarding at Coney Island, Utah (of all places) has their head on straight when it comes to religion in classrooms, Doomsday, why so serious?! and Ray “Atheist Central” Comfort

Links, as always, can be found on the story links page.

I really wanted to get more in about the Georgia conflict but as quickly as that has changed in the last 24 hours, and will likely continue to do so, I left it very brief.
