Amazing! – Krupp “Bagger 288”

Last week I started the “Amazing!” series off with one of the tiniest beasties nature has to offer so it seemed fair that I give this week to one of most impressive and gigantic mechanical monsters mankind has imposed on our little blue-green marble.

Pictures of this machine has been floating around the net for years and often gets written off as a well made Photoshop creation. The sheer scale and massive “saw” blade on the arm do make it look like a work of mechanical fantasy but it is quite real. It’s not a one of a kind either as the ‘288’ is part of a fleet of 21 such excavators operated by RWE Germany. The ‘288’ is the largest but several smaller versions are quite common in the industry.

Social networking traffic on WordPress.com

I imagine the underlying goal of most anyone that takes the time to blog is to have someone read their thoughts. No matter the theme, intended audience or quality of content taking there is likely someone out there that will read, watch or listen to whatever it is you do with your own little nugget of the web. There’s little technical know-how involved with the process (on a basic level at least) but actually getting your work seen in the sea of blogs can be something of a challenge.

Sites like Technorati, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Scoutle (among dozens of others) can help get your work noticed and generate some traffic. Typically this involves setting up an account and putting a little snippet of code onto your page and/or posts. Blogs hosted by WordPress.com, like mine here, can be at a serious disadvantage due to the code that is and isn’t allowed in posts and sidebar widgets.

Blog and podcast update

I’ve moved my personal blogging over to my Atheist Nexus page, found here:

Feel free to say hi, harass me…whatever. It’s a social site so be social!

FEEBLE UPDATE,  July 29th: I’m pretty sure I have everything covered from a techncial standpoint. Graphics are up, audio software in place and thoroughly played with, content ideas nailed…I’m excited to get rolling. Aside from my custom CSS and graphics layout (which likely won’t see the light of day for some time) things are good to go.

It’s a one man operation and I really, really want to avoid just having it just be me on the mic talking about issues. That’s not to say I won’t have rants and opinion pieces regularly. I’m comfortable laying out my personal views and including the views of others but I’m also going to be doing ‘field work’ on relevant topics, armed with a notepad, my digital voice recorder and a camera (I’ve likened it to a poor-mans “this american life” with a focus on atheist/freethought content and viewpoints). Mostly I want to make something good, somewhat original and have it be worth peoples time to download and respond to. Some ideas will work, some won’t…it’s new ground for me.

I’m targeting the Republican National Convention as my first foray with the hopes of talking to people from both sides of the fence. There’s going to be more then enough supporters and protesters, I just need to find the ones willing to sit down and talk for a few minutes.

I won’t be doing video for the foreseeable future. I like the portability and accessibility of audio and, frankly, I don’t have the finances for the hardware and software that I would want to use for video (I can’t imagine people would want to watch me talking when they could just listen anyway). If things go well I would like to produce video of my various field trips as well as the podcast…time will tell.

That said, I’m leaving town on the 30th for a five day hiking and fishing trip. If I have time tonight I will get my first ‘cast’ online. If not it will be early next week (Aug. 4th-5th).

Please feel free to contact me on Atheist Nexus or email me: contact@thefeeblelance.net if you have anything you want to say.
