Mythbusters vs. Moon Landing

I tend to humor conspiracy theory proponents. They’re typically quiet, generally decent humans and more or less harmless as far as I’m concerned. Getting into a debate with one has the potential to be as mind-numbingly painful (not to mention useless) as debating¬† a fundamentalist christian but if you just let them ramble on and nod every once and a while you can escape without tearing out your hair. I don’t believe this brand of lunacy should go on unchecked but when they person you’ve come toe-to-toe with ‘knows’ they’re right and has ‘evidence’ it becomes an exercise in futility.

Quite frankly, if nothing else, it amuses the hell out of me. Reading pages upon pages detailing the secret presidential meetings with space aliens (wherein the pres trades citizens for alien technology) that have been going on since the 50’s is one thing but having someone whom honestly believes this stuff tell you all about it is nothing short of hilarious.

When a Poe isn’t.

I stated very early on that it wasn’t my sole intent to make this blog a constant source of fundamentalist ridicule. I hold to that (see my post on Tardigrades) but being as the bigfoot scandal is over, the raelians are quiet and scientologists haven’t tried to kill anyone in a while…I’m at a loss. Some fairly interesting stuff happened in the Olympics this week but I imagine you’re just as sick of hearing about Phelps (not fred) as I am. That aside, and in my own defense, some of this stuff is just impossible to ignore.

Before I jump head-first into the merde de jour I feel the need to make sure we’re all familiar with the term “Poe’s Law” and what it means when someone ‘calls a Poe’.

Seeya later Dems

RiP Democratic PartyA while back it was announced that the Democratic National Convention will be kicked off with what’s being called the “first-ever Democratic National Convention interfaith gathering“. The polarization among loyal democrats seemed nearly instant, some seeing it as a line in the sand and others writing it off as nothing but a show to win votes. The latter was my initial reaction; it just seemed to surreal. The overall weirdness of the ordeal never left my mind but I’ve been able to mentally write it off as a song and dance maneuver to get the fence-sitters until very recently. The Saddleback church event happened, my mind exploded and I saw things a little differently. It wasn’t just an issue of the DNCC alienating atheists, humanists and other generally godless folk anymore, it was all out assault on secular politics.

Keep in mind the difference between being an atheist and believing in a secular government. One is a political view while the other is a world view. You can be of any faith, worship any god you like and still believe in a secular form of government. I only point this out because there seems to be a common juxtaposition of the terms.

Social networking traffic on WordPress.com

I imagine the underlying goal of most anyone that takes the time to blog is to have someone read their thoughts. No matter the theme, intended audience or quality of content taking there is likely someone out there that will read, watch or listen to whatever it is you do with your own little nugget of the web. There’s little technical know-how involved with the process (on a basic level at least) but actually getting your work seen in the sea of blogs can be something of a challenge.

Sites like Technorati, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Scoutle (among dozens of others) can help get your work noticed and generate some traffic. Typically this involves setting up an account and putting a little snippet of code onto your page and/or posts. Blogs hosted by WordPress.com, like mine here, can be at a serious disadvantage due to the code that is and isn’t allowed in posts and sidebar widgets.

If there is no god…ohnoes!

Fundamentalists news websites, how I love thee, especially WorldNutDaily. WND never ceases to provide amusement in the form of fundie logic and wacky advertisements. Claiming itself as a ‘news source’ this beyond right-wing rag makes Fox news look like the Disney Channel. I used to get pissed at the B.S. they sling but I’ve come to embrace it for what it really is; satirical humor. Some people can take this stuff with a grain of salt and some can’t, so steer clear if you’re easily¬† aggravated by ignorant bible thumping and rhetorical, fallicious logic. If you can stomach it ignore the ‘news’ links and head straight for the commentary pages. With scathing insights from the likes of Anne Coulter, Pat Boone, Hal Lindsey and Chuck Norris (yes, that Chuck Norris…sorry kids, he’s a hardcore creo-bot) you know you’re in for a treat.

In all fairness, there are a small handful of decent commentaries to be found if you really work for it. They have to print a few things that aren’t completely batshit crazy if they want to call themselves “credible”.

Tonight this little gem caught my eye: If there is no God.

Amazing Tardigrades

The world in general is pretty amazing and I think as adults we sometimes loose sight of this. Life just kicks us in the ass at some point and, for some of us, that curiosity and amazement flickers out. In a past show I alluded to this in a rant about how people might be a little happier in day to day life if they would stop worrying about the sudden stop at the end and just appreciate how amazing our little blue/green ball is.

In the spirit of that rant I’ve decided to start a new weekly post called, quite simply, “Amazing”. I’ll be detailing things I look at with that forgotten childlike wonder and question incessantly while my brain simply says “cool!”. Man-made, natural, earthbound and stellar…there’s plenty of amazing stuff out there to talk about. Hopefully some of these things will appeal to you in the same fashion.

For my first “Amazing” post I’ve dragged out one of my favorite animals: Tardigrades!

Bill Donohue Hates America

Catholic league president Bill Donohue probably hates you. Unless, of course, you are Bill Donohue.

The Catholic League, despite the name, doesn’t particularly reflect the views of the catholic church in general due to the barking lunacy of this Donohue character. He’s vicious, angry and more or less anti-everything, aside from his own dogma, which makes him a turd in a lot of peoples laundry.

I first became aware of this vacuous chode a while back when he called for the firing of University of Minnesota-Morris Prof. PZ Myers for throwing away a eucharist cracker. As a source of amusement I now keep up to date with the CL’s press releases and I’ve come to the conclusion that this man could only ever love or respect himself.

In this weeks release we find Billy calling for Democrats to “nix offensive bloggers”, whom have been given press credentials, from the DNC. You can read the full text there if you like but more or less he’s whining because he doesn’t like what some of the bloggers have to say. He picks three, from the 120-some odd bloggers that have been credentialed as members of the media, to pick on: Daily KOS, Bitch Ph.D and Towleroad. I couldn’t imagine these sites were as bad as Donohue seems to think…
